Fujoshi O'Clock (11/29/14)

What time is it? It's Fujoshi O'Clock, the biweekly feature at Nagareboshi Review, when I bring to you the latest fujoshi-related news and reviews and various shiny BL-flavored things. There is also a focus on trans and bisexual anime/manga. Why? Because rotten girls need love too!

This week on Fujoshi O'Clock:

• Otaku Champloo has posted lessons from Australia's Manga Futures, a scholarly manga conference, that are centered around gender/sexuality questions and how they play in Japanese culture and writing as well as the role of participants in fandom.
• ふう子 at Hazukashii Kedo looks at two recent BL manga titles available in Japanese: Himitsu, Hitohira by Kawamura Ayano (a volume of related shorts) and Hidamari ga Kikoeru by Fumino Yuki (in which a college student falls for his hearing impaired classmate).
• A roundtable of bloggers at MangaBlog discuss their favorite food manga, since the U.S. Thanksgiving was this week, and Fumi Yoshinaga's What Did You Eat Yesterday? and its handling of food culture and gay life in modern Japan receives a lot of love and praise.
• Discotek Media announced their latest slate of anime licenses and rescues, most of them scheduled for release in 2015. One of them is Descendants of Darkness/Yami no Matsuei, a classic BL-flavored supernatural series about shinigami who work in an office.

Reviews:

• Slightly Biased Manga's Connie reviews the first Embracing Love omnibus by Youka Nitta. It is being re-released in bulk books through Viz's SuBLime imprint. She also reviews volume 2 of Castle Mango by Narise Konohara, a current DMP release.
• s.e. smith at this ain't livin' reviews Wandering Son volume 1 by Takako Shimura, one of the few manga series with trans characters available in English.
• Animation Scoops reviews Massive: Gay Erotic Manga and the Men Who Make It, an anthology filled with various bara artists/authors, including Gengoroh Tagame and Takeshi Matsu.

PR: Viz's SuBLime Imprint Announces New Licenses At Yaoi Con 2014

LOVE STAGE!!, THE WORLD’S GREATEST FIRST LOVE,

GINGER HONEY, THE NIGHT BEYOND THE TRICORNER WINDOW, And More!

San Francisco, CA, September 15, 2014 – SuBLime, the global yaoi manga publishing initiative between VIZ Media and Japan’s Animate, Ltd. (Animate), provided detailed updates for a variety of brand-new and continuing yaoi manga titles during its YaoiCon 2014 panel this past weekend in San Francisco. News of the acquisitions of several exclusive new digital and print titles thrilled fans in attendance.

To the delight of many fans, SuBLime announced plans to release Eiki Eiki and Taishi Zaou’s LOVE STAGE!! (Rated ‘M’ for Mature) in print starting May 2015 with additional volumes to follow every other month. In this romantic comedy, the protagonist’s family is packed with famous celebrities but Izumi Sena is actually a huge otaku with aspirations of becoming a manga creator.

SuBLime also detailed plans to publish GINGER HONEY (Rated ‘M’ for Mature), creator Isaku Natsume’s humorous follow-up to DEVIL’S HONEY (also published by SuBLime), which is set for digital-only release February 2015.

This week on Fujoshi O'Clock:

• News for Youka Nitta fans: the manga-ka will be starting a new manga, which will start running in the April 28 issue of Be-Boy Gold.
• The first promo video for the Love Stage!! anime has been posted online. The anime is planned to air this July.
• Manga Therapy talks Evangelion and the Kaworu/Shinji relationship in both the anime and the manga. Naturally, major spoilers for NGE! Too bad it doesn't address any possibility of bisexuality, which as a bi otaku has me sadface.
• Otaku Champloo discusses Room801, an Australian BL convention that addressed both yaoi and yuri. And pigeons? Cool.
• The Japan Society Film Program posted photos from their 'gender-bending yaoi' party, following a viewing of Summer Vacation 1999 aka a film adaptation of Heart of Thomas by Moto Hagio. (Hat tip to Fantagraphics for the link!)
