Fujoshi O'Clock is a monthly feature at Nagareboshi Reviews which focus on boys' love/yaoi news, reviews, and meta. The feature also puts a spotlight on trans/bisexual/genderqueer manga/anime news and articles. • Oguie Maniax, with news for Genshiken fans: a Hato Kenjirou fanzine is going to be a thing. Unfortunately, it looks like submissions are already closed.
• DMP will be adding 24 yaoi/BL manga titles to their digital collection --- authors include Ootsuki Miu, Lily Hoshino, Psyche Delico, and Ayan Sakuragi.
• Two interesting essays from s.e. smith that might be of relevance to those who read/watch anime/manga with trans characters: is objectifying trans women the only way cis people can relate? and what would an ordinary trans narrative look like?.
• The cast for the Hetalia stage musical has been posted; the musical is called Hetalia ~Singing' in the World.
• The anime film for the Dokyusei/Classmates series is now set for February of next year; it will be based on the Asumiko Nakamura manga by the same name.
• Foreign Policy writes about Japan's trans-friendly comic book revolution, citing Wandering Son's popularity as an example.
• Found on Twitter: the animated school system that every good fujoshi wants to enroll in.

It was actually quite difficult to keep up with the reviews this month, so only articles again.

• In further convention news, YaoiCon's 2015 guest of honor will be manga-ka Tateno Makoto. YaoiCon recently held events at Anime Expo 2015, including its infamous annual Bishounen Bingo. The industry guest for September 18-20 will be Martha Asahi, a JP cosplayer and BL manga-ka.
• Korean BL visual novel November Boy, being released by Sekai Project, now has a video trailer, as shared by Hardcore Gamer's website.
• Elementree has released an English version of Yaoi Ooku: Distorted Love to iOS and Android; the BL dating sim game takes place during the Edo era and features the voice of VA Tetsuya Kakihara.

• YaoiCon's latest announcement is that manga-ka Makoto Tateno will be a guest at the convention this year. The California-based yaoi con is scheduled for September 18-20.
• Experiments in Manga looks at manga team Studio Kosen, a Spanish duo who has released BL titles in English and is now being published in Sparkler Monthly.
• The Beautiful World looks at same-sex desire and unions in Kaori Mori's A Bride's Story, currently being published by Yen Press.
• Smart Bitches, Trashy Books recently posted a very BL-friendly podcast in which they talked about male/male English language fiction, blogging on m/m fic, and recommendations for further reading.

Digital Manga Continues Its Dominance of Manga Kickstarter Campaigns

Oh, Digital Manga. Beloved DMP. One would think that they would have given up on Kickstarter after the last massive campaign and the amount of criticism they have received for using it so much in the past 2-3 years. But, y'know, it still works for them, so why not?

After the success of the Ludwig B Kickstarter - which had followed a behemoth disaster of a multi-title Tezuka campaign that ended in failure and an overwhelming disbelief in the system - DMP is now doubling down with not one, but two campaigns running concurrently: reprinting the classic yaoi series Finder and printing the Tezuka 2-volume title Alabaster.

Manga Worth Reading has a good post on the entire situation, including a look at Alabaster's stretch goal and how the company is openly responding to critiques of its current Kickstarter strategy. Read the comments, too!

Personally, I haven't backed a DMP Kickstarter since they licensed Barbara. It's not because of a lack of interesting titles worth funding; I just don't like DMP's newfound reliance on Kickstarter for everything from licensing to reprinting. It shakes one's confidence in DMP as a company and makes one wonder what their finances look like if they need to crowdfund so much.

However, if you want to see a title in print a lot and DMP is the one fixing to release it, Kickstarter or not, then go ahead and fund 'em. Support your favorite manga titles! In an era of digital piracy and scanlations, putting your money where your mouth is - especially for manga, a niche product in the world of books - is more vital than ever before.

• The winter promo for the Hybrid Child anime series is now available online as a video. The OP of the series, sung by Annabel, is featured in the PV.
• According to Hana to Yume, the Descendents of Darkness manga will be launching a huge project sometime this year. Few details are available. Relatedly, Discotek is planning on releasing the anime adaptation on DVD with an English dub track.
• Otaku Champloo looks at the "dangerous" boys' love manga of 2015 - including some of the upcoming BL releases and the outstanding BL titles and manga-ka from last year, according to JP manga periodical Kono BL ga Yabai.
• Here's a two-fer of 'bara'/gay manga feature news: the Hairpin interviews Anne Ishii, one of the people behind the Massive anthology, while Towelroad looks at the Massive promotion of a book centered around gay manga for gay men.

• Digital Manga Publishing has announced a new manga license: Kou Yoneda's Even So, I Will Love You Tenderly, a one-shot manga of an early series by the author, also licensed by DMP.
• Manga Bookshelf's 3 Things feature for October 30 focuses on pretty pictures and beautiful manga spreads; the post includes Heart of Thomas by Moto Hagio.
• On a more academic note, Library Juice Press is calling for papers on library services for LGBTQ folks. Deadline is January 15, 2015.
• ANN writes about seven anime couples who make love and war - pairings who fight together; Kurogane and Fai from CLAMP's Tsubasa series is one of the couples, as is Michiru and Haruka from Sailor Moon.

Reviews:

• Cartoon Geek Corner reviews CLAMP's Legal Drug, recently re-released in omnibus format through Dark Horse Comics. This shonen-ai series already has a sequel series, its English publication set for next year.
• The Manga Test Drive reviews the Petshop Of Horrors series by Matsuri Akino. It's a horror series dripping with subtext between Count D and Detective Leon (although the above reviewer seems blind to the whole thing *shrugs*).

This week on Fujoshi O'Clock:

• The BL acquisitions this week are jumping: SuBLime grabbed several new titles including the Love Stage!! manga, Sentai Filmworks scooped up the Love Stage anime, and Crunchyroll is going to simulcast the shonen-ai OVA, Orenchi no Furo Jijo.
• The episode of Love Stage!! that will be bundled with a volume of the manga now has a second video teaser. It will come out on November 22 in Japan.
• An original anime series named Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Love! has been announced for winter 2015. It looks like prime fujoshi bait on the same level as Free! and Yowapeda.
• If you live in Japan, you can now find BL manga characters in the meat section of your local supermarket. The Ito Yokado chain now has packaged meats with images of these cute characters.

PR: Viz's SuBLime Imprint Announces New Licenses At Yaoi Con 2014

San Francisco, CA, September 15, 2014 – SuBLime, the global yaoi manga publishing initiative between VIZ Media and Japan’s Animate, Ltd. (Animate), provided detailed updates for a variety of brand-new and continuing yaoi manga titles during its YaoiCon 2014 panel this past weekend in San Francisco. News of the acquisitions of several exclusive new digital and print titles thrilled fans in attendance.

To the delight of many fans, SuBLime announced plans to release Eiki Eiki and Taishi Zaou’s LOVE STAGE!! (Rated ‘M’ for Mature) in print starting May 2015 with additional volumes to follow every other month. In this romantic comedy, the protagonist’s family is packed with famous celebrities but Izumi Sena is actually a huge otaku with aspirations of becoming a manga creator.

SuBLime also detailed plans to publish GINGER HONEY (Rated ‘M’ for Mature), creator Isaku Natsume’s humorous follow-up to DEVIL’S HONEY (also published by SuBLime), which is set for digital-only release February 2015.

• A new Japanese language BL questionnaire/mailer has just opened online. Naturally, it's more targeted to BL fans who read the manga untranslated.
• ANN's latest Daily Cosplay is from DRAMAtical Murder; the character is the Shiroba version of Aoba Seragaki.

• The sixth installment of the BL Pose Collection Created Together With Artists series is turning heads with its real life subjects photographed in very - ahem - interesting poses. There's even behind the scenes videos!
• the beautiful world talks about the importance of Hourou Musuko/Wandering Son and its treatment of trans characters. Some spoilers for the manga are in this post.
• An unaired episode of Free! Eternal Summer will be bundled with the seventh BR/DVD release. This disc will be released in March 2015.

• The Hybrid Child OVA has a second promotional video; the Fandom Post link has more details on the DVD/Blu-Ray release it will be getting.
• The Love Stage!! OVA has a new TV ad, streaming via Kadokawa's YouTube channel. The ad has the anime series' own opening theme featured.
• Yuri no Boke looks at trans male characters in older manga, focusing on works by Riyoko Ikeda, member of the Year 24 Group.
• ANN has information on the DRAMAtical Murder anime home release. The anime, based on the BL game by Nitro-Chiral, will include the OVA episode and several related CDs for the DVD and Blu-Ray box sets.
• A live action version of Docchi mo Docchi has been announced by Kaiosha. Docchi mo Docchi aka Same Difference is a BL manga by Nozomu Hiiragi and is available in English by June Manga/DMP.

Reviews:

• Reverse Thieves reviews One Is Enough by love as part of their Ongoing Investigations series. This manga-ka is new to me; I'm looking forward to seeing more from them.

• AnimeNation reviews GEN Manga's This One Is Plenty. I dunno, this review is incredibly patronizing towards manga fans and yaoi fans and assumes that "homosexual romance stories" automatically have sex scenes which . . . ugh.

And A Merry 801 Day To You, Fellow Fujoshi!

It's hard to believe it's 801 Day already. August seemed to creep up on this blog out of nowhere, and over half the year is gone in the blink of an eye. One of the first proper posts on this blog was about 801 Day, which shows you the BL roots that Nagareboshi Reviews has come from and is still proud of.

801 Day, for those who need a reminder, is also known as Yaoi Day, mainly because in Japanese, 801 can be read as yaoi. You can look at my first ever 801 post for more background information, currently sitting pretty on the left hand sidebar as it is my most popular post to date. Good job, fellow rotten girls and boys!

I thought it would be nice, this year, to share some important resources for yaoi fans that are in English. Hopefully, yaoi fans can use this post as a reliable list of places to read, buy, and learn about the boys' love genre.

Fujoshi O'Clock (8/01/14)

This week on Fujoshi O'Clock:

• In news about Hybrid Child's upcoming anime, Annabel will be singing the main theme song. The first volume of the anime ships out in late October.
• English language comics get queerer with the first issue of Dash, an LGBT private eye story set in the 1940s, now available for order.
• The wildly popular series Junjou Romantica is getting a third season. Previous seasons are available through Nozomi Entertainment. It is based on the Junjou manga, whose manga-ka is also the author of Hybrid Child's manga.
• Contemporary Japanese Language has a masterpost of essays on gender studies and cross-dressing in anime/manga, which delves into queer-friendly properties such as takarazuka theatre, gender fluid identities, and the manga Wandering Son.
• Highlighting the trans in LGBT, Racialicious has a complete write-up of the transgender trends in popular media panel that was at SDCC 2014.
• Otaku Journalist talks about being an "out" fujoshi and how it differs from just being an otaku that isn't into BL/yaoi.
• Otaku Champloo already has their 801 Day Fujojocast online and available for listening. Audience participation is requested!
• Anime News Network has put the spotlight on the new Love Stage anime series. It includes character profiles, cast list, and voice actor information.

Reviews:

• Naru at Organization Anti-Social Geniuses reviews est em's Age Called Blue and is pulled in by the wonderful story, although taken aback by the similar character designs.

This week on Fujoshi O'Clock:

• Otaku Champloo shares their fujoshi shopping guide in Japan, with plenty of pictures and helpful links. Of course Akihabara is included!
• Filed under "it's about time!": SuBLime Manga has licensed the Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi manga for English language release. It to set to hit shelves early next year as a print-only release.
• Falling under the 'T' of LGBT but still relevant all the same, The Beautiful World blog has a list of manga with transgender protagonists. Naturally, Wandering Son/Hourou Musuko is on the list, as well as After School Nightmare and Riyoko Ikeda's Claudine.
• MangaGamer will be localizing and releasing pa-rade's No, Thank You!!!, the boys' love/bara PC game, for Western players. The game is about an amnesia-stricken boy who ends up working at a mysterious bar during his recovery. Some of the photos in the link are NSFW.

This week on Fujoshi O'Clock:

• The Beautiful World talks about LGBT pride parades and why they are still needed, from a non-Western perspective. It's split between three pages, so don't forget to read all of them! Content warning for quoting bigoted slurs.
• Bruno Gmuender Publishing has announced several new titles for their English translated gay manga line of books. They include titles by Gengoroh Tagame and Takeshi Matsu. The page is in German; PhoenixTerran has a quick and short translation of the important parts of the news on their Twitter.
• As the second season of Free! premieres next week, fujoshi swim fans now have new ways to watch it. Funimation has licensed Free! -Eternal Summer- for simulcast and home video release; the first season is still available on Crunchyroll.
• Speaking of Free!, you can now purchase a life sized tapestry of Rin Matsuoka as he joins the ranks of his fellow swimmers in scroll form. There is also a new Free! season two poster at the ANN link.

Reviews:

• Experiements in Manga looks at two collections of bara manga by manga-ka Gengoroh Tagame, Endless Game and Gunji. It also discusses The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame, another collection of works by the manga-ka.
