Three Things I'm Thinking About This Week

  • I'm thinking about the shuttering of JManga, an e-manga website that seemed to have the potential to be the dominate resource for legit, niche electronic manga titles. However, it seemed like their reliance on niche titles and lack of actual ownership of titles, among other issues, led to their downfall. This has left eManga to fill in the void left by their oncoming closing of shop, but their efforts may not be enough.
  • I'm thinking about Vertical Inc., specifically their move to put certain underselling titles into digital release. Very excited to see Twin Spica is one of those titles; it's a series I would recommend to pretty much everyone who reads manga or has an interest in coming-of-age stories about a girl who wants to be an astronaut.
  • Lastly, I'm thinking about manga adaptations of video games. I recently blew through a stack of Legend of Zelda manga, covering games like Oracle of Seasons/Ages, Majora's Mask, and Minish Cup. I confess, I've only played several Zelda games, so a lot of it was reading the story for the first time. However, they made games that I cannot play for not owning a certain console more accessible, and they were entertaining enough to peak my interest in the games I can play. Are some manga adaptations just really long adverts for video games? It's not like reading the manga version of Phantom Hourglass will ever perfectly replicate the experience of playing it, but it makes a reader want to check out the game - well, if done correctly, that is (and can we get some love for Captain Linebeck going on here?).

Fujoshi O'Clock (1/25/13)

What time is it? It's . . . Fujoshi O'Clock, the biweekly feature at Nagareboshi Review, when I bring to you the latest fujoshi-related news and reviews and various shiny BL-flavored things. Why? Because rotten girls need love too!

This week on Fujoshi O'Clock:

  • Ogiue Maniax posts File #63 in the Fujoshi Files with Chi-chan from Tonari no 801-Chan; little is known about her beyond the fact that she's a BL fanatic. Love the blue thing next to her.
  • Manga Bookshelf posts their round-up of JManga news this week, including a good number of BL titles. The Ningen title looks especially adorable.
  • Boys' Luv.com shares their latest Swag Bag post after a few months, and there is some BL representation in the form of Fantagraphics' release of Heart of Thomas.
  • Apparently, there is now an LGBT-friendly anime convention in Miami. It's called Animate! Miami and it took place last week at the Miami Airport Convention Center. Even better: they are already gearing up for next year, scheduled for January 17-19.

Reviews:

  • Connie at Slightly Biased Manga reviewed volume one of DON'T BLAME ME by Yugi Yamada. She really likes Yugi Yamada's work! Good thing there is a lot of them available in English.
  • Boys' Luv.com reviewed SKY LINK by Shiro Yamada. To say they did not enjoy it would be a bit of an understatement.
  • Naru at Organization Anti-Social Geniuses reviewed ALL THE TIME by Ikue Ishiba, a Digital Manga Guild release. It might be one of those BL manga that appeals to non-yaoi readers, judging by the review.
  • Melinda and Michelle at Manga Bookshelf reviewed THE HEART OF THOMAS by Moto Hagio. Short version: it's a classic title and go pick it up right now!
  •  ふう子 at Hazukashii Kedo reviewed SUKI, KAMO by Hakutou Noriko as well as KIMI NI UTSURU HOSHI by Kojima Lalako. Some of the sample images are NSFW! I really adore Lalako's artwork, it's quite lovely.

Fujoshi O'Clock (9/21/12)

What time is it? It's . . . Fujoshi O'Clock, the biweekly feature at Nagareboshi Review, when I bring to you the latest fujoshi-related news and reviews and various shiny BL-flavored things. Why? Because rotten girls need love too!

This week on Fujoshi O'Clock:

  • Via ANN: JManga has added another BL manga title, this time My Dear Prince by Fumi Tomoe. There will be at least four volumes of the series. There also seems to be an Eiki Eiki title coming up on their schedule.
  • A bit of an older link, but helen_damnation has put together a list of what she calls 'non-creepy yaoi manga' - BL manga that does not have issues with dubious consent and non-con romance. I believe Mr Convenience was recently licensed, and Bond(z) has been out for some time now in English.
  • Ogiue Maniax's Fujoshi Files goes onwards with File #54: Kiryuu Yuuzuki of Kissxsis, a high school teacher who has a samurai hug pillow in her house.
  • ふう子 at Hazukashii Kedo talks about the tenth anniversary of Kusame Sakae, a BL manga-ka who is probably very prolific by now. The Twitter interview has passed already but past tweets using the event's hashtag should still be readable.
  • Over at The Beautiful World, they blog about trans* and intersex representation in manga; it's not yaoi related, but it is LGBT related and therefore is probably pertinent to readers of BL/yuri materials. It also seems to be part three in a series of posts, so please check out the two previous parts!

801 Day Is Here (Again)!

Yes, once again it is yaoi day, the day where all rotten girls rejoice and read a ton of yaoi manga like it's boys' love Christmas or something. Fun, right? Yes.

As usual, Digital Manga is kicking off 801 day right with their Yaoi Day trivia Twitter contest, in which they're giving away copies of their BL manga for the right answer at the right time. You will have to follow @digitalmanga and tweet the right answer as soon as the question is asked to win, so you'll probably want to keep their Twitter open in a separate tab!

Update: Also, Viz's SuBLime imprint is hosting its own yaoi giveaway, including digital manga and several drama CDs. All you have to do is comment! Oh, and be 18 years of age or older. Should be fun!

You can also read fellow blogger Otaku Champloo's post for 801, wonderfully titled "Hello. I am a Fujoshi. Today's my day." Although I think "coming out" as a fan of yaoi is language appropriated from the LGBT movement, her thoughts about letting people in real life know her taste in manga are definitely worth reading!

For those looking for something deliciously boys' love today, I have a list of recs below, all readily available for purchase in English from legitimate publishing companies. Enjoy!

JManga News: Here Comes Morita-san!

According to the latest JManga news letter, on December 27th the first volume of Tae Sono's series Morita-san wa Mukuchi will be available for purchase on the site. How awesome is that? As someone who has a soft spot for the anime series, I look forward to reading the source material in English. I do so adore me some Morita-san ♥

You can read my initial thoughts and final thoughts on the first season of the Morita-san wa Mukuchi anime, or just browse through the series' tag on this blog.

Crunchyroll is currently hosting streaming episodes of the Morita-san anime here. Watch it!
